N18, 000 Included As OAU Releases New Fees ...Three Weeks After Shut-Down
The new tuition fees regime announced by the OAU management includes an N18,000 development fee for new students
The new regime, announced Monday in a press release by the OAU management and published in several online news media, showed a significant reduction.
According to the new regimes of charges, tuition fees for NEW students are:
In addition to the above tuition fees, all new students will pay a once of "Development Levy of Eighteen thousand naira (N18, 000.00), which is paid once and for all by Fresh Students throughout the duration of their studentship in the University."
RETURNING UNDERGRADUATES will pay:
The OAU management also alerted the public on the possibility of contrary figures being circulated.
"...Figures that may be brandished about by individuals or groups, different from the above are false and are not from the University authorities," the statement read.
OAU students had protested after the institution increased fees by "about 320% from about 17,000 naira to 100,000 naira for fresh students apart from N20,000" as revealed by the President of Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), Student Union, Ibikunle Isaac, in a Channels TV chat.
The resulting waves of protest led to the closure of the Premier University since the 19th of June.
With the new regime quoting a maximum of N57,700 as the highest fees, it could be argued that a substantial reduction has been effected.
It is however unknown if the students would accept the new fees, which is still over 100% increase over the old fees.
