LASU Is In Crisis Because Of My Anti-Corruption War - VC

People unhappy with the anti-corruption drive going on in LASU are responsible for the crisis in the institution

Corrupt elements within the Lagos State University (LASU) system, who are unhappy with the recent anti-corruption drive, are behind the problems facing the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor John Obafunwa, at a press conference held at the weekend, said some senior staff at LASU want to keep on milking the system.

According to him, the crisis created by the hike in school fees has resolved and is therefore not the reason for the institution's lingering crisis.

"...it is not unlikely that because of the probing attitude of this administration, the request that everything should be placed on the table, it is only natural that some elements would not be happy," he said.

Obafunwa said his administration's successful anti-corruption drive is not going down well with certain people, hence the problems.

"You will notice that it is not unlikely that because of the reforms being carried out, some people will not be happy,” the VC said.

Obafunwa also alleged that LASU's problems began with the emergence of  new ASUU leadership

"But it is also interesting to note that when this administration came in 2011, we had an ASUU executive and there wasn’t any problem until that ASUU executive left and a new one took over.

"Now all of a sudden, we have a problem. Could we be dealing with issues that go beyond what we are seeing?"

The VC listed some of his administration's efforts at developing LASU and promised an imminent end to the crisis.

"On a final note, will there be an end to this current crisis? The answer is yes. Whether people like it or not, change has come to LASU," he said.

Meanwhile, LASU students are still seeking  a downwards review of the the hike in the institution's tuition fees.
