Senate shut down varsity due to violent protest

The school has been shut down for one month following protests.

The  has joined the list of other universities (University of Lagos and Adekunle Ajasin University) which has been recently shut down by its management over students protest.

The senate at UNIPORT has shut down the school for the next one month with immediate effect following a protest by school students which eventually became violent.

UNIPORT deputy Registrar in Charge of Information, William Wodi, stated that all students are to vacate their hostel accommodation before 6: 00 pm on Monday, April 11.

According to him, students’ union and their affiliate bodies have also been suspended till further notice. Security personnel were seen trying to disperse the protesting students to avert further crisis.

The protesters claimed that the school authorities have been insensitive to their plight and vowed to intensify their protests until the management of the school responds to their demands.

UNIPORT students, on Monday, protested the increase in tuition fees by the school management. Things took a turn for the worse when it was alleged that a member of the police force shot dead one of the students at the school. This escalated the protest, shifting the focus to the death of their colleague.
