One of the problems of Nigerian education is that teachers at the basic level are not 'adequately prepared for the job.
'Our Teachers Are Not Prepared For The Job' — Don
A university don has blamed unprepared teachers for the problems of education at the basic level of education in Nigeria, urging more training.
According to Professor Timothy O. Oyotunde, a senior lecturer at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), the quality of education at the primary level is dropping and affecting the entire education sector.
Speaking in an interview with , Oyotunde said unprepared teachers are a major minus.
"It appears that our teachers are not being adequately prepared for the job in terms of language, content and professional development because there are three things that make a quality or a good teacher," he said.
Ayotunde, who is the coordinator of post-graduate programmes at UNIJOS, noted that a good teacher must be "competent in the language of instruction" in order to be able " communicate your ideas effectively to the children."
He added that the ideal teacher must also be "grounded in the content and also "be familiar with methods and theories of teaching."
"A good teacher should be able to teach children to think and not just to memorise information and this requires retraining of the teachers."
The Prof. also added that lack of teacher monitoring, éspecially in public schools , contribute to laxity among teachers.
He called on stakeholders to "invest massively in teacher training and retraining" and "constant monitoring" of the teachers.
