Niger’s Aliyu donates free land for proposed Anglican university

The Niger State government has given 100 hectares of land for the proposed Walter Miller University (WMU).

The Niger state governor Dr. Babangida Aliyu has allocated 100 hectares  of land to the Anglican Church for its proposed Walter Miller University (WMU).

This was revealed by Gen. Theophilus Danjuma who was speaking at the the Sod Turning Ceremony of the institution on Monday in Diko.

“We also wish to acknowledge, with immense gratitude, the offer of this 100 hectares of land to us at no cost by the Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu," the onetime Minister of Defence said in a The News report.

“The gesture is one of its kind in this country.

Danjuma, also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, WMU, said the university is being established in honour of Dr Miller, a pioneer Missionary who was actively involved in establishing schools, a church and dispensary in Northern Nigeria from 1902 to 1929 under the leadership of Bishop Tugwell.

“It is a memorable day because we are about to bless the land on which an Anglican University is to be built in the North,” Danjuma said.

Danjuma said the institution's "admission policy will be free and fair and non-discriminatory.

“We shall encourage the study of comparative religion, targeting ourselves at breaking down barriers to religious harmony, better ethnic understanding and espousing the primacy of Nigeria as a nation.’’

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Planning Committee,  Prof. Adamu Baikie, said preparations are going on fine even as its await approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC).

“NUC approval is coming; we have gone half way and we expect that probably after the Christmas break, it will be ready, then we go to JAMB for the inclusion of the school’s name in its brochure."

The representative of the Niger state governor, Dr Jacob Kolo, said the land was donated to demonstrate the government's commitment to promoting education.
