Lagos returns N.2bn to LASU students, 7 months after Fashola reversed fees

Lagos has begun to refund the excess fees paid by LASU students. The government says it has already disbursed N209 million to some students and will soon pay the rest.

The Lagos State government has refunded the sum of N209 million to students of the Lagos State University (LASU) as it promised after the school fee hike was reversed in Lagos.

Speaking at an event recently held at the institution, Governor Babatunde Fashola

He said this N209 million is being disbursed to 100 level students and 200 level Direct Entry students, adding that students at higher levels will be paid in the second batch

The fees had been hiked from about N25,000 to between N193,000 and N350,000, leading to a violent confrontation that led to the arrests and incarceration of some students.

In August however, Fashola reversed school fees to N25,000 and the institution promised to pay back the excess already paid by some students.

Some had at the time called the reversal a political move meant to secure students' votes during elections.

This was noted by Olukoga who said the Lagos state government is committed to ensuring LASU students' wellbeing.
