61 students attend STEM Field Experience Camp
Mentorship was provided by volunteers who were well-experienced in the fields of study which included Nigerians who had studied abroad and some in diaspora who visited specifically for the camp.
The just-concluded three-day program gave sixty-one school students from four schools - Queen’s College, Kings College, Yaba College of Technology Secondary School and Federal Science and Technical College, all in Lagos - the opportunity to explore a variety of career options in the fields of science and medicine.
The students were engaged in various activities ranging from classroom teachings to medical facility tours and career personality tests as well as other activities. It all culminated to a career panel discussion on the final day of the camp which involved afforded the children as well as their parents in attendance to interact with the professionals in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields .
The Executive Director for GWN, Temini Ajayi, who is also a student at Duke University School of Medicine in Texas, USA, co-founded the GWN initiative with his friend Kerry Omughelli as a way to give back to Nigeria. 'We thought about what are some of the key problems that we could have a direct impact on and one of those key problems we identified was the way that learning was done in Nigeria,' Ajayi said.
Grow with Nigeria (GWN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving secondary school and the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their careers.
