But a Paul Pogba brace and Chris Smalling winner sealed a huge comeback win.
Following the win, Manchester United expectedly took over Twitter to celebrate their win over bitter rivals Manchester City.
It was a relief for Manchester United fans who had seen Pogba heavily criticised for dyeing his hair blue before the derby.
The Jose Mourinho critics were also preparing to have a full night to tear the Manchester United manager apart but the dramatic turnaround gave the Red Devils fans the bragging right.
“Remember that team City won the Premier League title against United at home? Nah, me neither hahahahahahaha,” a Manchester United fan wrote.
The game also dominated Twitter Nigeria as ‘#MCIMUN’ topped trends after the game.
Nine out of the 10 trending topics-united, Sanchez, Sterling, manchester, Man Utd, Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling, Vincent Kompany-on Twitter Nigeria were also from the game.
Sterling roasted
Twitter users roasted Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling after missing a plethora of chances during the game.
“If someone ever sends an assassin after me, I hope they send Raheem Sterling. #ManCityManUtd,” popular comedian Trevor Noah tweeted in reference to Sterling’s misses.
“Raheem Sterling has cost us winning the title in a derby. Not once but three times. His worst performance since joining City,” a Twitter user wrote.
“Raheem Sterling watches Danny Welbeck YouTube compilations,” another user wrote.
“It's Sterling that caused this rubbish. Man was busy bottling chances with his bum bum like clay pot,” another person said as the roast continued.
“Pep’s improved Sterling they said how shite must he have been before Pep came then,” another person wrote.
Praises for Pogba and Sanchez
Fans on Twitter also had praises for Pogba who netted the brace to launch the comeback win and Alexis Sanchez for having a hand in Manchester United’s three goals.
“You wanted Paul Pogba to show up when Manchester United needed him? How about 2 goals in 98 seconds against Manchester City,” a Twitter user said about Pogba.
“My god!!! Manchester United is Alive!!!! The Spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson is Alive!!!! Paul Pogba has humbled me!!! I'm speechless!!!! #MUFC,” another person said.
“Best performance in a Manchester United shirt for Alexis Sánchez. Big game, big player,” a user wrote about the Manchester United No. 7.
“Sanchez masterclass in the second half. No doubt about it. Been an absolute demon. Essential to all 3 of our goals,” another person said.
Surprisingly there was no place on the trends for David de Gea who made some very fantastic saves for Manchester United during the game.
