Spitting to the crowd, hands held high in triumphant rhythm, Phlow thrilled the crowd at the 2015 Hennessy VS class for lyricists. That was her first shot at the mainstream industry, coming better at the Terry Tha Rapman-powered rap competition for Skullcandy, where she was the first runner-up.

Phlow is a lyricist who got influenced from the best in the game and now works her socks off with determination in the industry. Hip-hop is male dominated in mainstream, with the Lagos underground scene providing more competition and collaboration.

Her first mixtape contains, a number of influences, from the 70s blissful creators to the contemporary lords. “Mind, Body, and Phlow” EP is her first effort. Phlow is unproven with no body of work, and she pushes past that with this album.

“I can hear myself…” is the sentence that starts off this album, a line which shows a window into her inspiration for this project. ‘Reputation’, is the singer going over synths and head-nodding drum arrangement and samples. She goes introspective all through this work, digging deep into her life and the constantly formative experiences of a girl given to the art, yet mundane in daily activities. ‘Reminder’ is the champion of this theme. ‘Looking at nobody’ is a run through the labyrinth of sounds, with piano becoming 70s Funk. ‘Bank it’ samples a line from Jay Z’s 99 problems, after you get through all the feline braggadocio and chest-thumping. You could be forgiven for thinking Lauryn Hill rolled back the years to make a comeback. But that’s Maka who brings it all to the album. Johnny Osbourne ‘In your eyes’ is present in ‘Reputation’ remix.
