Do we still need the 10 commandments in 2017?

The 10 commandments were Biblical principles given to the children of Israel, so, do we still need to abide by them now?

Do we still need the 10 commandments in 2017?

They are:

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

2. You shall not make idols.

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

5. Honor your father and your mother.

6. You shall not murder.

7. You shall not commit adultery.

8. You shall not steal.

9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

10. You shall not covet. (Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5)

It is my opinion that they were given to guide them and show them how to live after they left Egypt.

Coincidentally, five of them were repeated in Matthew 19:16-19 by Jesus Christ.

The passage reads: "And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

These 10 rules were given a long time ago, thus, a lot of people struggle with them, wondering if they are still to be followed today.

I think they should still be followed today because they are still very relevant even in 2017.

The first says worship no other God but Me. Of course, we should know better to abandon Our Father for any other god or idol. This applies to the second and third commandments.

These days, many people struggle with going to church or even resting on Sundays. We are so busy hustling and chasing the paper. However, it is still important, even in 2017, to keep the Sabbath day holy by recharging with God's words and being surrounding with like-minded believers. This way, we set the tone for the new week.

Yes, its the year 2017, but it still unacceptable to kill, commit adultery, steal, or lie. Hence, the need to continue to follow God's commandments. Also, coveting (defined as yearning to possess something that belongs to another) does nothing good for you. It robs you of your joy and makes you unhappy.

It is only common sense to honour our parents, they took care of us and made us who we are. Besides, we want our kids to respect and honour us too right? So, why can't we do unto others (our parents) what we want others (our kids) to do unto us?

I particularly like what popular American evangelical Christian evangelist, Billy Graham, said concerning this issue.

He said: "God gave the Ten Commandments to us, and the reason is because he wants us to live good lives — lives that are peaceful and happy and productive. God isn’t a harsh, angry judge just waiting for us to get out of line so he can punish us. He is our loving heavenly Father, who knows what is best for us.

I can’t help but wonder if you’ve ever actually read the Ten Commandments (you’ll find them in the Old Testament, in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5). If so, which would you throw out? Would you abandon the commandments against murder, or stealing, or lying, or unfaithfulness? Would you toss out the command to take care of our health and our environment by allowing for sufficient rest? Would you omit the commands against greed or the neglect of the elderly (especially our parents)? I seriously doubt if you’d abandon any of them, because the alternative is chaos."

I know the 10 commandments were given years ago, but they are very still applicable today.

As Graham said, without them we would have nothing but chaos so, we definitely need them to live upright, moral lives not just for ourselves , but also for the society.
