A summary of the celebrity couple's 12-year union

Whisper it gently; the unexpected somehow happened - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are being used in the same sentence as Divorce.

Anyway, let’s quickly go through what their 12 years of blending looked like.

May 2004 : Rumours of an on-set romance between Pitt and Angelina Jolie gather pace after they both start filming Mr & Mrs Smith. Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time.

January 2005 : Jennifer and Brad announce in a joint statement that they had decided to split. They promise to remain good friends.

March 2005 : Jennifer files for divorce. She cited citing 'irreconcilable differences' as her reason for filing the divorce. Brad and Angelina's rumoured romance did not die down.

April 2005 : Brad and Angelina's pictures surface from Kenya where they went on holiday with Angelina’s son, Madox. The media takes this as a confirmation of their romance. The couple refuse to say anything just yet.

July 2005 : Angelina adopts a daughter from Ethiopia. Her second child – she was named Zahara.

October 2005 : Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston finalize their divorce.

January 2006 : Angelina and Brad announce she is pregnant with their first child while Brad applies to formally adopt her children Maddox and Zahara.

May 2006 : The couple's first biological child Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt born in Swakopmund, Namibia. They chose Namibia so as to avoid media frenzy.

March 2007 : Jolie adopts another child. This time, it's three-year-old Pax Thien from Vietnam.

May 2008 : At the Cannes Film Festival, Angelina confirms she is expecting twins. Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline are born in July.

October 2008 : Angelina discloses that she and Brad “fell in love” on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith. Up till then, they had both maintained that their relationship did not start until after he split from his former wife.

December 2011/January 2012 : The couple, in different interviews say that the children are encouraging them to marry.

April 2012 : Brad and Angelina reveal their engagement. They'd been together for 8 years at the time

February 2013 : In a New York Times Op Ed in May, Angelina tells the world about the double mastectomy she secretly had after discovering she had an imperfect BRCA-1 gene that put her at great danger of developing breast and ovarian cancers.

July 2014 : It is announced that Brad and Angelina will reunite on the big screen for “By the Sea.” That was the first time since they worked together since Mr & Mrs Smith.

August 2014 : The couple hold a secret wedding ceremony at Chateau Miraval in France and a short family honeymoon in Nice afterwards.

September 2016 : Angelina Jolie files for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
