Why Appeal Court nullified Adamawa Governor’s impeachment

In reaching the judgment, the panel of judges ruled that Nyako impeachment wasn’t carried out in accordance with the law.

The court reached the decision today, February 11, 2016, at a sitting in Yola, the state capital, Premium Times reports.

They also held that the principle of fair hearing wasn’t observed during the impeachment proceedings hence the entire process was null and void.

The court therefore held that Nyako be accorded all the benefits accruing to the office of the governor throughout his tenure and that he be paid all his entitlements as governor of the state while it lasted.

The Appeal court however refused Nyako’s request that he be returned as governor on the basis that his tenure had already expired.

Nyako was impeached on July 15, 2014, after 17 of 25 members of the state’s House of Assembly found him guilty of 16 charges of gross misconduct.
