Agency postpones Edo election to September 28

The INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu will address newsmen on the latest development soon.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), INEC's National Commissioner for voter education and publicity, Solomon Soyebi, said the election will hold on September 28, 2016.

INEC agreed to postpone the election after a security meeting held in Benin- Edo state this evening.

The Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), in a press released on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, hinted of possible terror attacks on Edo state, and asked INEC to postpone the elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) kicked against the warning by the security agencies and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct security agencies to provide full security for governorship election rather than postpone it.

Despite the security warning, the election body announced that the governorship elections will hold on Saturday, September 10, 2016, as planned.

The PDP guber candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu had predicted that the election would be postponed, according to reports.

Sources say INEC was forced to postpone the election because the DSS and police refused to guarantee the safety of the agency's officials.
