Senator says N6M is not enough for accommodation

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator said that a bank refused his request for a N20 million loan after he received only N6 million as housing allowance.

Nigeria’s Senators are said to also be suffering the effects of the economic crisis in the country as banks have reportedly refused to loan them money.

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator told Punch that a bank refused his request for a N20 million loan after he received only N6 million as housing allowance.

“The National Assembly Service Commission had only approved N6m to each of us as housing loan. What can that type of money do in a place like Abuja? It is grossly inadequate but we have taken it as a sacrifice,” the unnamed Senator said.

“Until things get better, I will not have more than two aides. I have not been able to get a loan from my bank. No senator has received June and July salaries,” another Senator from the South-West said confirming the situation.

However the Senate has said that it is working hard to ensure that the lawmakers receive their salaries, which haven’t been paid since they were inaugurated on June 9.

“The issue of welfare of all senators is paramount to the leadership of the Senate and the Senator Bukola Saraki-led leadership is committed to it,” the Chairman, Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Media, Information and Public Affairs, Senator Dino Melaye said.

He however denied any knowledge of the banks’ refusal to grant loans to Senators.
