The apex court reached the decision today, February 11, 2016, after dismissing the appeal of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Aisha Jumai Alhassan, popularly known as Mama Taraba.
The judgment was given by a panel of seven judges led by Justice Ibrahim Galadima.
“I am of the firm view that there is no merit in this appeal and it is hereby dismissed,” Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour said delivering the unanimous decision.
“The Judgment of the Court of Appeal is affirmed and the election of Governor Darius Ishaku is hereby upheld,” he added.
Alhassan had challenged Ishaku’s victory and scored an initial victory at the state election petitions tribunal.
The tribunal’s decision was however overturned by the Court of Appeal.
Alhassan would have been Nigeria’s first democratically elected female governor if she had been victorious.
She is currently the Minister for Women Affairs.
