48 Feared Dead In School Explosion

A suicide bomber wearing the school’s uniform joined the students at their general assembly and then detonated the bomb.

Survivors and an attendant at a local mortuary have put the casualty figure at 48, AP reports.

17-year-old student Musa Ibrahim Yahaya said:

“We were waiting for the principal to address us, around 7:30 a.m., when we heard a deafening sound and I was blown off my feet, people started screaming and running, I saw blood all over my body.”

Several other people who were at the scene have been left severely injured and hospital workers say some of them might need to have their limbs amputated.

Soldiers were said to have arrived at the scene of the disaster but they were chased away by locals over their inability to provide protection against the attacks.

About 2,000 students were believed to have been present at the school’s assembly and the casualties are said to be between the ages of 11 and 20 years old.
