29 Dead, 80 Injured In Yobe Explosion

A suicide bomber detonated a vest in Potiskum, Yobe State on Monday, November 3, during a procession by Shi’ite Muslims to mark Ashura.

The explosion which occurred in Yobe State on Monday, November 3 has reportedly claimed 29 lives and left 80 people injured.

A suicide bomber detonated a vest near the Fadiya Islamic School in Potiskum during a procession by Shi’ite Muslims to mark Ashura.

22 people died at the scene of the blast while 7 others died in hospitals after the incident, Leadership reports.

A staff of the Potiskum General Hospital said:

“In all, we have 29 persons dead, comprising of 16 children and 11 adults, of which 24 of them were male and three female.”

“Immediately after the blast, we were able to evacuate 22 persons that were killed by the bomb, while five others died of gunshots, but we have over 80 persons that sustained various degrees of injures either as a result of the blast or gunshots.”

The incident has been confirmed by the Yobe State police commissioner, Mr Danladi Markus.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it is being blamed on terrorist sect and Sunni Muslim group Boko Haram, who are known enemies of the Shias.

Ashura is observed annually to commemorate the death of Hussein the grandson of Prophet Mohammed.
