The 2016 Academy Awards nominations were announced on Thursday, January 14, 2015, featuring all white actors in the four acting categories.

The obvious lack of diversity led to the resurrection of the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite, considering that no person of colour has been nominated for an award this year.

The only 'black film' nominated this year is "Straight Outta Compton" for Best Screenplay.

Everyone seemed sure Elba would get a "Best Supporting Actor" nomination for his portrayal of a West African battalion leader in Netflix's first feature film "Beasts of No Nation."

But then neither Elba, Abraham Attah, who played Agu, or the movie itself received any sort of recognition.

We are not forgetting Will Smith's portrayal of Nigerian Forensic Pathologist, Bennet Omalu, in the controversial NFL story "Concussion."

While the movie received mixed reviews, critics applauded Smith's performance, and everyone was sure his boldness would get him a nomination.

The Rocky sequel which was widely received and acclaimed for its performances and directing, received only one nomination.

And no, it isn't Michael B. Jordan in the "Best Actor" category, it's white actor Sylvester Stallone in the "Best Supporting Actor" category, in a movie about Apollo Creed's son.

Amid its mixed reviews, Samuel L Jackson's performance as Major Marquis Warren a.k.a. "The Bounty Hunter," received positive reviews.

And while the actor was snubbed, the controversial director of the movie, Quientin Tarantino, also failed to nab a nomination.

The biopic which wasn't only a box office hit, but also a powerful movie widely accepted by fans and critics, failed to nab a nomination for any of its talented cast.

However, the movie is the only black film nominated this year for "Best Screenplay," but then again, the screenwriters are white.

"Of course I am disappointed, but [it is] not to take away the greatness (of the films nominated). This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board. You are never going to know what is going to appear on the sheet of paper until you see it. We have got to speed it up.”
