4 facts about 'Living In Bondage' [Vintage Nollywood]

is a 1992 drama thriller directed by Chris Obi Rapu, written by Kenneth Nnebue & Okechukwu Ogunjiofor and produced by Okechukwu Ogunjiofor. The movie tells the story of a man who uses his wife for mone rituals and is continually haunted by his late wife's ghost.

Here are a few things you didn't know about the movie:

1. It is not the first Nigerian home video: Contrary to popular opinion, Living In Bondage is not the first Nigerian home video. There are a few barely remembered ones like the works of Okpuru Anyanwu which was shot in Igbo and aired on eastern TV stations.

Although what launched the big break of the Nigerian movie industry better known as Nollywood, was Living In Bondage due to its nationwide acceptance.

2. It was shot entirely in Igbo Language: The film was shot entirely in Igbo Language but was subtitled in English. From the beginning, the influence of Onitsha, capital of Anambra State in the Nollywood can not be overemphasised.

3. More than half of the Nollywood movies after LIB are spinoffs, basically: The trend of human sacrifice for money rituals in Nollywood began with LIB. Since then, at least half of Nollywood's biggest hits is based on a man sacrificing a loved one or a random pregnant woman on the road who crossed his path.Thankfully, the scene has evolved and we have more real life and creative plots.

4. The movie was shot Straight-To-Video: This simply means it was released straight to home video rather than a theatrical release or television broadcast. So that basically means all the money made was from cassette sales. Even though most of the movies made till this day are still straight-to-video, the big budget ones are making it to the cinema more frequently.
