With initial favourable responses from critics (its gotten a Rotten Tomatoes score of 57%; not stellar but definitely better than what 'The Chronicles of Riddick' got) and Vin still riding off the high of Fast and Furious 7, 'Riddick' is looking set to be a box office hit which would be a great pay off for his deal with Universal Studios.
Vin Diesel's 'Riddick' Set to Hit Theatres; Plus Details of How There Came to be Another 'Riddick' Movie
Fun fact: But for Vin Diesel's doggedness, 'Riddick' would never have seen the light of day. After the lacklustre performance of Riddick prequel, 'The Chronicles of Riddick' (the movie which was released in 2004 made a total of $57million on a budget of $110 million), Universal Studio executives refused to make another Riddick movie. However when they invited Vin Diesel for a cameo appearance in The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, Vin made a play for the rights of the movie in exchange for his acting fee. After some initial reluctance on the part of Universal Studios, they eventually relinquished the Riddick movie rights to Vin Diesel in exchange for his acting fee in The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. Vin went on to shoot the movie on a much leaner budget of $38 million; that's almost a third of what was used to shoot 'The Chronicles of Riddick' and when it came time to source for a movie distributor, surprise, surprise, Universal Studios offered to do it.
