Straight Outta Compton is quickly becoming August's main success story, after it earned $26.8 million in its second weekend. With this weekend's three new releases falling flat at the domestic box office.

After failing to reach their projected numbers this weekend, Sinister 2, Hitman: Agent 47 and American Ultra are below both Compton and Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, which is in its fourth week in theaters.

Compton easily took the number 1 spot this weekend after Universal added around 200 more screens for the film's second week, bringing the total to around 3,000. After earning a big $60.2 million in its domestic debut last weekend, Compton dropped around 56 percent in its second outing, Hollywoord reporter says.

Thanks to a smart marketing campaign, good reviews and strong word-of-mouth, Compton has already passed $100 million after just two weeks at the box office, hitting an estimated $111.5 million through this weekend. Compton's second weekend win marks Universal’s 13th weekend atop the North American box office.

This weekend, both Compton and Universal's comedy Trainwreck reached the $100 million milestone. Universal, having a record-breaking year, now has seven titles that have passed $100 million domestically this year.

Tom Cruise's fifth turn as agent Ethan Hunt in Rogue Nation continues to do solid business and, due to the lackluster performances by the three newbies, it took the No. 2 spot at the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $11.7 million. Its total domestic tally is now at $158 million.

Rogue Nation also took the No. 2 spot internationally, earning $25.2 million from 63 territories this weekend. The international cume is now $280.8 million, and the spy actioner's global cume through Sunday is $438.6 million.

Currently, Straight Outta Compton is not showing in any Nigerian cinemas.
