ABC and Shonda Rhimes have reportedly made the decision to bring the TV show to an end, and the official announcement will be made on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at ABC’s upfront presentation in New York, TVLine reports.
In recent times, Rhimes has given indications that she had an end date for the show which has reportedly ranked as one of ABC’s most-watched and buzziest dramas for most of its run.
Variety reports that in January, Channing Dungey, Chief of ABC Entertainment indicated that the network was expecting the finale to come sooner than later.
According to TVLine, the decision was made by Rhimes.
“I would say yes, in Shonda’s head,” Dungey said in January when asked whether there was a plan for ending the show.
“I know already that she has some great ideas for next season, which will be season seven. We have not really talked about what happens after that. But I love the show and I would happily keep the show on as long as she feels that she has creative runway to write the show.”
Kerry Washington was thrown into major stardom following the release of the show and its success reportedly helped solidify Rhimes’ status as an uber-showrunner.

When asked by Variety recently, how much longer the show would run, Washington said, “I don’t know, it’s in Shonda’s hands,” she said. “I don’t know, but I trust Shonda. We’ll see.”
