He’s Alive! Papa Wemba Dispels Death Stories

A legend reawakens…he never slept.

Africa was thrown into profound sorrow and mourning when news circulated that one of our music legends, Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba better known as Papa Wemba has crossed over to the great beyond. But now, it’s been confirmed to be a hoax.

The story made the rounds, from Monday, June 3, 2013, with myriads of informative blogs amplifying it to believable levels. The reports specifically divulged that the 64-year-old had ‘passed away after battling diabetes’; raising panic amongst his many fans scattered across the African continent. But Now, Papa Wemba has calmed down fears with a message on Twitter.

A disclaimer on his Twitter account read, Rest assured dear fans I am still here with you«.

Papa Wemba was one of the very first musicians to join the influential Soukous band, Zaiko Langa Langa when it was created in December 1969. He has released over 40 albums.

And so we rest, confident that the singer of a thousand songs and the purveyor of Soukous culture rests with us, alive.
