Nigerians lose N84m to xenophobic attacks

Nigerians in South Africa have lost 4.6 million Rand (N84 million) to the recent xenophobic attacks in the country, according to reports.

The Nigerian Union in SA revealed the sum after documenting the losses incurred by citizens.

According to the President of the Union, Ikechukwu Anyene, the losses were originally put at 1.2 million Rand (N21 million).

“The Nigerian Union in South Africa has completed documentation of the losses suffered by Nigerians to xenophobic attacks. Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand or N84 million during the attacks,” Anyene said during a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“A mechanic workshop owned by a Nigerian in Jeppes, near Johannesburg, for example was completely burnt with 11 cars inside it. The loss is put at more than one million Rand or N20 million,’’ he added.

Meanwhile, there has been a war of words between Nigeria and SA after the former recalled its envoys in the latter country over the attacks.
