How to leave all your work stress at the office before coming home

Your work stress doesn’t just wreak havoc on your day - it can torpedo others’ lives, too.

Baylor University scientists found that your jerk boss can make you so cranky on the job that you take your temper home to your wife, who then transmits your poisonous attitude to people in her office the next day.

But in lieu of blowing your lid the second you walk through the door, there’s an easier way to blow off your stress so that no one has to suffer: Researchers at the University of Central Florida say exercising during the work day helps you leave your work stress at the office.

Scientists tracked the sleep and activity patterns of more than 100 participants with full-time jobs.

The results: People who tallied around 11,000 steps a day, as well as logged 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night, were less likely to get angry when they returned home from work.

In fact, when the scientists sent a follow-up survey to the study subjects’ cohabitants, they also found that people who burned an extra 587 calories a day were less likely to mistreat their families at home.

“The study gives us a new perspective on the importance of getting an adequate amount of sleep and exercise,” said study author Shannon Taylor, Ph.D., in a press release.

“It’s not just good for you—it’s good for your spouse, too.”
