How much caffeine is really in your favorite cup of coffee?

Coffee has been shown to have lots of health benefits, so order up.

But while some of us are very particular on our coffee order, others are good with just a cup of black coffee from whatever place has the shortest line.

After all, a cup of coffee is a cup of coffee, right? Turns out, the amount of caffeine in a cup of average joe between four popular coffee spots is actually very different.

Researchers from Labdoor looked at the caffeine content in a medium cup of brewed coffee from Starbucks, 7-Eleven, McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts from stores in both New York and San Francisco.

According to a Buzzfeed article, the researchers found that 7-Eleven had the highest average amount of caffeine per cup, at 280 milligrams of caffeine per cup.

That's right, 7-Eleven took home the caffeinated crown. Who else is doing some mental math on how much money they could have saved the past year by skipping Starbucks in lieu of a convenience store? Ugh. (Turns out, convenience stores aren't as unhealthy as you think, too. This guy proved it.)

The research revealed that the coffee giant Starbucks came in second at 267 milligrams, McDonald's McCafe had 227 milligrams, and Dunkin' Donuts bringing up the rear at 220 milligrams per cup.

According to the article, 7-Eleven credited their high caffeine amount to their dedication to developing their coffee based on the specific region.

"We understand we have customers in different areas looking for different products," 7-Eleven representatives told Buzzfeed.

"Therefore, we focus on developing local and regional coffee, along with various other local and regional 7-Eleven offerings, to meet the needs of our customers in those locations."

Alright, Starbucks fans, you must be feeling a little cheated right now, but don't worry.

The researchers found that while Starbucks didn't have the highest average caffeine amount, they did have the most consistent amount of caffeine per ounce of brewed coffee, at 17 milligrams per ounce.

Meaning, you might not be getting the biggest bang for your buck caffeine-wise, but you're much more likely to get the same caffeine dose every time.

So if you're looking for a caffeine boost without adding in an extra shot, try switching your daily stop to one of the higher-ranked spots.
