Great news, drunk texters: WhatsApp may let you unsend certain texts

But this potentially clutch feature comes with a catch

When some of us drink alcohol, we become irresponsible monsters who shouldn’t be trusted with phones, or really anything for that matter, until we sober back up. Drunk texting has long been the root of many breakups, firings, regrettable hookups, family issues, and for all we know, the occasional geopolitical crisis.

Fortunately, WhatsApp may have a solution to help prevent future carnage. The Facebook-owned messaging service is reportedly toying with the ability to edit or outright delete text messages you’ve either mistakenly or more likely regrettably sent to your friend, boss, crush, or mom on a sloppy Friday night, reports Mashable. This is big.

The Twitter account @WABetaInfo, which watches WhatsApp like a hawk, recently discovered that the new feature is currently being tested on beta versions of the app on iOS and Android. But there’s a catch: You can only change or delete the text if the person you sent it to hasn’t received it yet.

On WhatsApp, you can track this by looking at the checkmarks underneath each text: A single grey checkmark means your recipient hasn’t gotten your message. If you see this, you’ll have the power to undo all your mistakes. But if you notice the dreaded two checkmarks lurking below your text, that means it’s irrevocable and there’s no turning back.
