NLC planning strike in 18 offending states

The industrial action might start on Monday, May 25, 2015, in 18 states whose governors have not paid the civil servants for varying periods of time.

Workers who are being owed salaries in states across the country might soon go on an indefinite strike, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has revealed.

The industrial action might start on Monday, May 25, 2015, in 18 states whose governors have not paid the civil servants for varying periods of time, Punch reports.

This was disclosed on Thursday, May 21, by the General Secretary of the NLC, Peter Ozo-Eson.

Eson said that the strike had already started in Plateau State and that others would soon begin as well.

“Plateau is on strike, Cross Rivers is going on Monday; the various task forces are working. A team is leaving for Benue to commence action; they are now free to commence action and we are supporting them,” Eson said.

The NLC National Administrative Council had set up a task force in March to ensure payment of salary arrears owed workers by some state governments.

The offending states are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Ekiti, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers and Zamfara states.

Some of the states which aren’t owing their workers are Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto and Taraba.
