Court clears ex-Bayelsa Governor of fraud

The charges against Sylva were quashed on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, by presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed.

Timipre Sylva

A Federal High Court in Abuja has cleared former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva of fraud.

The charges against Sylva were quashed on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, by presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed.

In his ruling, the judge held that the withdrawal of another case on the same matter before the Federal High Court showed that the prosecutor did not intend to prosecute the case to a logical conclusion.

The case against Sylva was instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which accused the former governor of embezzling N19.2 billion worth of state funds between 2009 and 2012.

The case against Sylva suffered an initial setback when the Federal Government withdrew its case against him.

The development has led many to speculate that Sylva was let off the hook due to the part he played in the campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari.
