The NCS had given a deadline of April 12 for defaulters to pay up or have their vehicles seized.

The Senate reached the decision following a motion presented by Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Na’Allah.

Na’Allah also urged the Senate to order the NCS to “stop all actions” until an explanation was provided before the Senate committee on customs.

The lawmakers subsequently debated the issue and reached a resolution to order the suspension of the policy and summon the Comptroller-General of Customs to brief the Senate on the move.

Customs boss, Hameed Ibrahim Ali earlier announced a grace period of one month, between Monday March 13 and Wednesday, April 12, for all defaulters to pay up.

Ali also warned that those who failed to pay sums owed would be prosecuted.
