Senate rejects Senator’s bill to recognize Lagos as commercial capital

The bill was however rejected when Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, called for a vote on the issue.

The bill, which was sponsored by SenatorOluremi Tinubu, also provided for Lagos to receive one percent of Nigeria’s income based on the recognition.

The proposed law however caused controversy in the Senate after Federal Capital Territory (FCT)‎ Senator, Philip Aduda, said that FCT Abuja should also be similarly recognized.

This led Senator Olusola Adeyeye, who was in support of the bill, to describe the FCT as a “rotten pampered child”.

“We have a governor that banned alcohol, and if my own people consume alcohol, that governor should not enjoy a kobo of value-added-tax (VAT) from my area,” he said according to The Cable.

“If it is 13 percent for Bayelsa and Delta, it should be so for Lagos state from VAT. The FCT is a rotten, pampered child. But I withdraw my statement on that. The FCT is being subsidized by the federal government. That must end‎‎,” he added.

The bill was however rejected when Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, called for a vote on the issue.

Senator Tinubu represents the Lagos Central Senatorial District and is also the wife of All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Tinubu.
