Again, Senate steps down National Peace Corps bill
Deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu noted ‘illegalities’ in the collection of N40,000 from prospective volunteers of the Peace Corps.

Senator Bayero Nafada, the chairman of the committee had moved for the adoption of the report today, Tuesday, May 2, 2017.
But, James Manager raised an issue regarding the recent ‘harassment’ of the Peace Corps by the Police.
Similarly, Deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu noted ‘illegalities’ in the collection of N40,000 from prospective volunteers.

He noted that there were also cases in court adding that the bill be stepped down till another legislative day.

But, Senator Binta Garba urged the upper chamber to pass the bill as it would give a legal backing to the Peace Corps.
She maintained that the N40,000 being collected was used to buy training kits for the volunteers.
Senator Godswill Akpabio noted that the bill should be stepped down "due to the controversies which surround the establishment."

Senate President Bukola Saraki referred the matter to the committee on judiciary to investigate the issues involved and report back in two weeks.
"We need to be guided by our rules by not setting bad precedent," Saraki said.
"The fact that it is court should not be an issue. We have to also look at the relationship with the green chamber but at the same time there are issues. We are not stepping it down because of the court," he added.
