‘Don’t scrap Maritime University,’ Group tells Buhari

The spokesman of the group, Gabriel Godson-Ndinwa said they have written a petition to Mr. President and to the National Assembly concerning the issue.

 

Niger Delta youth under the aegis of Youth Coalition Force for Niger Delta have called on President Buhari not to approve the scrapping of the Nigerian Maritime University.

The spokesman of the group, Gabriel Godson-Ndinwa said they have written a petition to Mr. President and to the National Assembly concerning the issue.

According to him, the action of the group was predicated on a comment made by Minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, that the University might be scrapped.

The group’s spokesman said Amaechi made the comment On Janauary 19, 2016, when he appeared before Senate Committee on Maritime Transport.

They also added that they were inclined to believe the comment, because the presidency has not said anything to acknowledge or deny the comment.

Punch reports that Godson-Ndinwa also called on President Buhari to mandate the acting Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Haruna Jauro to release the N2bn take-off grant that was approved for the institution.

The group also threatened to tag the President “an anti-Niger Delta,” if he goes ahead with the plan to scrap the University.
