Businessman docked over alleged theft of goods worth N50m

A 24-year-old businessman, Edafe Daniel, was on Monday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing shipping documents and clearing goods valued at N50 million.

Daniel, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi told the court that the offences were committed on April 3, at 10. 50 a.m. at Apapa Wharf, Lagos.

According to Emuerhi, the accused conspired with others still at large, to steal a bill of lading marked NYKS2310982540, belonging to one Mr Chima Orazurume.

"Daniel with the stolen documents cleared and took possession of the goods in the container.

"He carted away Volkwagen motor spare parts loaded in the container, valued at N50 million," Emuerhi said.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs Oluwadamilola Olanipekun, ordered the accused to deposit N500,000 at the deputy registrar's office as part of the bail conditions.

She granted the businessman bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Sept. 28 for hearing.
