The apex court, on Thursday, May 7, 2015, ordered the Federal Government and the National Assembly to maintain status quo in the ongoing constitutional amendment exercise.

The suit had been instituted by the Federal Government on April 23 after President Goodluck Jonathan refused to approve the amendments.
Jonathan further explained that he denied assent because the amendments proposed sought to dilute the powers of the President among other irregularities.
However, the National Assembly, in response, stated that it would override Jonathan’s decision after 30 days.

The President had also said that in preparing the amendments, the lawmakers failed to adhere to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution.
