In the last few months, the Nigerian army launched a major offensive against Boko Haram, capturing several towns back from the Islamic militant group.

The last military briefing said that only 3 towns, including Gwoza, remained under Boko Haram's control.

The group had captured Gwoza last August, with the Boko Haram leader declaring a caliphate in areas under his control.
