Nigerians remember fallen soldiers

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day has been set aside to honour all Nigerian soldiers who have been slain in battle.

Today, January 15, 2015, is the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Nigeria. The day has been set aside to honour all Nigerian soldiers who have been slain in battle.

Nigeria’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day was initially celebrated on November 11 before it was changed in commemoration of the surrender of Biafran troops to Federal troops on 15 January 1970 after the Nigerian civil war.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili honoured the fallen soldiers via Twitter saying:

“#ArmedForcesRemembranceDay: The labors and gallantry of our heroes past shall never be in vain. WE STAND with your families today & always.”

“#ArmedForcesRemembranceDay: BEST REMEMBRANCE for our fallen heroes is 4 our C-in-C &Security leadership to IMPROVE THE LOT OF THE LIVING.”

“TODAY is a good day for those who control our Security resources to REPENT of corruption & poor management.”

“WE will never forget,” she added in response to a tweet by one of her followers.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has also issued a commemorative statement saying that Nigerians owe the military a debt of gratitude.

“It is in this light that we urge all our compatriots to remember, especially in their prayers, the gallant troops who are currently battling the virulent insurgency in some parts of our country, against all odds. There is no better time than the occasion of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day to do this for the troops, as well as to spare a thought for those who gave their lives in defence of our cherished values,” the APC said.

President Goodluck Jonathan and other stakeholders in the military on January 12 attended an Interdenominational Church Service at the Ecumenical center in Abuja in commemoration of the 2015 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
