Poly Students Demand An End To Strike, Threaten Confab

Polytechnic students have again threatened to disrupt proceedings at the ongoing national confab in Abuja next week Wednesday over the government's failure to resolve the 8-months-old Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) strike.

Bus loads of placard carrying students from Anambra, Adamawa, Kogi, Niger states blocked traffic at Federal Secretariat junction in central Abuja on Friday morning.

National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) spokesperson, Abdulmajeed Oyeniyi,  said the students gathered in support of their lecturers.

“We are supporting our lecturers because they are fighting for our own rights and those of all polytechnics in the country,” Oyeniyi said.

ASUP members have downed tools since September 2013 to press for their 13 point-demand.

Oyeneyi warned that NAPS would mobilize its members to make sure that the next protest, planned to hold in Abuja, is larger.

“We want to send information to people that are not here today. By next week Wednesday we are stopping the confab in Abuja again,” he added.

The placard carrying students also demanded the sack of education minister Nyesom Wike.

It will be recalled that Student Pulse reported a similar incident on the 1st of May when Polytechnic student issued a 2-week ultimatum over the ASUP Strike.
