Angry Nursing Students Tackle Edo Government

Students of the Edo State School of Nursing have tackled the state government over alleged imposition of a former Principal of the State School of Midwifery as head of their institution.

The placard-carrying students locked the school gate and stopped people from coming in before marching to the state Government House, the Edo State House of Assembly complex and the Nigeria Union of Journalists secretariat.

According to the students, the new head who is a midwife and not a nurse would not be able to tackle the challenges they face in the school.

President of the Student Union Government, Anyanbu Johnson said appointing the Principal of the School of Midwifery was not in order.

"The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria stipulates that the principal of a nursing school must be a nursing tutor and not a midwifery tutor," he said.

A member of the school's student body, Marris Osadolor, said changing the school head would not solve their problems which included regaining the school’s accreditation.

“Until government restores our accreditation and give us a new principal, the school will not open and that is the reason we are protesting," she said

Osadolor further alleged that there was a teaching staff vacuum in the school.

"We don’t have enough lecturers, no school bus as promised and we are demanding that those things be restored... We lecture ourselves too and we don’t want that anymore.”

An official who spoke on conditions of anonymity said the students have no say in deciding who is appointed to head their school.

"But in any case, what is their interest about who becomes their principal? Their responsibility is to go and study in the school.”

The source added that the state government is already working towards getting the school re-accredited.
