It would throw them off because they expect you to slink away or try to shake them off by running away. Before you do this, do ensure that you are armed. It would not do to challenge your attacker while unarmed.

Bear in mind that these people are no longer operating on the rational level of mind that you are. They are either crazed, drunk or both.
