Jim Furyk surges into a share of the lead at Canadian Open

Jim Furyk produced a memorable round as he powered into a share of a two-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the Canadian Open on Friday.

Furyk went blemish-free, carding the equal-lowest round of the day - a seven-under 63 - to improve to 10 under overall at the Royal Montreal Golf Course in Quebec.

The American sunk four consecutive birdies starting at the 14th hole and he is joined by compatriot and joint-overnight leader Tim Petrovic atop the leaderboard.

Petrovic - a shot clear at the start of play - hit a four-under-par 66 to maintain his position at the summit heading into the penultimate round of the PGA Tour event.

Two shots further back is Canadian hope Graham DeLaet after he had nine birdies and two bogeys for a 63 in the second round.

Back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes were followed by more at the 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th in an impressive display.

Kyle Stanley is also eight under for the tournament following his 67.

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell surged into contention, with his round of 65 helping him rise 27 positions into a tie for fifth at seven under.

American trio Justin Hicks (67), Scott Brown (66) and Andrew Svoboda (66) are all three shots off the pace.

Joint-overnight pacesetter Michael Putnam slipped to ninth at the close of play having managed three bogeys and three birdies for a 70.
