50,000 Nigerian girls die from unsafe abortions every year

According to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), more than 50, 000 Nigerian girls die annually from complications caused by unsafe abortions.

This was disclosed on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, by the National President of the NMA’s Committee on Girl Child Education, Chidi Esike.

Esike made the remarks during an awareness campaign organized by the Committee at Model Girls’ Secondary School, Ugwuachara, Ebonyi State.

“The theme of this particular project is Adolescence and the Education of the Girl Child-Negotiating the Mine Field,” Dr Esike said.

“We decided to interact with the students to create awareness of the major challenges facing them in their education through lectures and help them find best solutions that will make their education most effective,” he added.

Meanwhile, a charity organization, IPAS Nigeria, has urged policy makers to review the country’s abortion law in consideration of women who got impregnated through rape and incest.
