Govt urges women to access free medical services

Last week, the state government launched the Village Health Workers scheme where 1,200 females were recruited.

Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Rabi Daniel, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Tuesday.

NAN reports that the state government, in partnership with the Society for Family Health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, last week launched the Village Health Workers scheme where 1,200 females were recruited and trained to assist pregnant women.

“I am calling on our women to please avail themselves of the scheme aimed at reducing the high rate of maternal and neonatal mortality in the state,” she said.

She said the scheme would impact positively on health services in the state, especially on the rural women who encounter numerous constraints in accessing clinics and hospitals.

Besides, Daniel called on women to continue to support government activities and be proactive in contributing positively to the society.

She said more than 5,000 women have been trained on various trades and all settled on their own businesses from 2012 till date.

“Recently the wife of the Governor, Hajiya Adama Dankwambo, trained over 1,000 women on various skills and they were settled with N20,000 each.’’

She said the annual programme had in 2015 given beneficiaries N50,000 each with settlement materials.
