Government ready to contain Lassa fever — Director

The Cross River Government has said that it was ready to contain any possible outbreak of Lassafever in the State.

The Director of Public Health in the state’s Ministry of Health, Dr Sunny Omini, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Calabar on Friday.

He said the department has put Disease Surveillance Control Officers in all the 18 Local Government Areas of the state on alert.

He said the DSCOs have been told to report any suspected case to the Epidemiology Unit of the ministry for immediate action.

"We have told all the 36 DSCOs to 'shine their eyes’ and to immediately report any suspected case of Lassa fever/symptoms to the epidemiology unit.

"We also have a quick intervention force which can move at anytime, anywhere in case there is reported case.

"So, we are prepared for any eventuality. Cross River is ready, there is no cause for alarm", he said.

The director said the state had remainders of drugs for Lassa fever recently supplied by the Federal Ministry of Health.He said that although the state had no boundary with any of the states so far plagued by the disease, the state was not taking anything for granted.

Omini advised the people to report any suspected case of haemorrhagic fever to the health centres nearest to them.
