People can now grow weed in their home garden as senate approves new bill

The bill allows for the possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis and the growing of up to six plants.

If indications are anything to go by, weed also known as cannabis could be one step closer to becoming legal in Chile after the lower House of Congress approved a bill seeking to change the law in the country.

The lower house voted 68 votes in favor versus 39 against to push forward with the reform in general terms.

Thus, the bill would allow the possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis and the growing of up to six plants.

However, it still has some way to go to become law as a health committee will study the bill before the lower house votes again on each of the specific elements, from where it passes to the Senate.

Communist lawmaker Karol Cariola described the move of the house as "historic for medicinal users who wish to stop being persecuted and be able to access a medicine that they can grow in their gardens."
