FP2020 to host journalists on reproductive health

The organisers are concerned with the increasing demand for family planning commodities and services in Africa.

Specialist urges Nigerians to embrace family planning

The facilitators of the event, FP2020, said this in an invitation e-mailed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

It explained that the briefing was designed to scale up stakeholders awareness on the FP2020 fourth annual progress report.

“The report and the tele-briefing will share important updates on progress made in Africa since global leaders committed, in July 2012, to provide 120 million more women and girls with access to family planning information and services.

“The report also includes new data about progress made toward Nigeria’s commitments and outline specific steps Nigeria can take to accelerate progress,’’ it said.

According to the document, the organisers are concerned with the increasing demand for family planning commodities and services in Africa.

“Report shows unprecedented rise in modern contraceptive use among women across sub-Saharan Africa,’’ it said.

The invitation said that the progress would be launched during the FP2020 Reference Group meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

It said that the report marks the critical halfway point of the FP2020 partnership, launched at the historic London Summit on Family Planning in 2012.

The briefing will highlight key progress trends and underscore specific areas around which global, regional and local communities can rally in the remaining four years of the FP2020 partnership, including reaching the world’s young people and adolescents with high-quality services and supplies that meet their unique wants and needs.

Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director, UNPF; FP2020 Reference Group Co-Chair, would be key a speaker at the event, while the Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Tanzania, Ms Ummy Ally Mwalimu, is also expected field questions.
