Federal hospital reveals plan for mass burial of dead bodies

The reason for the planned mass burial is to allow room for fresh corpses, and give the environment a refreshing change, as some of the bodies have been at the hospital for ten years.

In Bayelsa, the officials of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenegoa, have revealed plans to give a mass burial to unclaimed corpses at the hospital’s morgue.

As a result, the hospital authority has given a 21-day grace period for owners of unclaimed corpses to identify them and take them away.

According to Punch, some of the corpses at the hospital have been with them for a period of ten years.

Dr. Dennis Allagoa, the Chief Medical Director, explained the reason behind the planned mass burial of the bodies.

He said, “We issued a 21-day public notice, because we noticed that corpses have littered the entire mortuary and there is no space to take in new corpses.

“As the decay goes on in the mortuary, the corpses have become a threat to human life because chemical and biochemical effects are ongoing.

“So, we want to clean up the area so that people can enjoy the benefit of a good site and space to bring in their corpses.”

According to Allagoa, some of the corpses are not full body parts. Most were brought to the health centre by security operatives.

“A lot of them are corpses that were deposited by the security operatives. Most of them are just bones and legs, and they are not actually full body parts.

“They brought in people that died on the road and from the river. People that died due to issues of militancy, they brought them in their mass and they kept them at the morgue.”

The appropriate authorities have been notified of the planned burial of unclaimed bodies, Punch reports.
