Woman arrested for selling 2-month-old baby for N450K
A 21-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly selling her two-months-old baby for a mere N450,000.
News Agency of Niger (NAN), reports that Effiong was arrested alongside the buyer of the baby girl, a 51-year-old woman, Rose Edward, a Port Harcourt, Rivers State-based business woman.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Cordelia Nwanwe, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Murtala Mani, said that a homeopathic doctor, Eneyo Nyang, was also arrested in connection with the crime.
ASP Nwaiwe added that Edward had already confessed that she bought the baby because she could not have one herself.
While confessing to the crime, the mother of the baby said she decided to sell her child because there is no one to take care of her.
“I sold the baby because of poverty. I don’t have anybody to help me. My father is late and my mother is sick and I don’t have anybody to help me,” Effiong said.
CP Mani who warned members of the public wishing to adopt children to follow due process, assured people of the state that the command would not relent in its effort to curb crime in the state.
