Social media bragging fails when it matters most

Her untimely death has been trailed with accusations, counter-accusations, confusion and embarrassment. Olaiya's body is still in Canada and the task of getting here to Nigeria for burial has exposed the social media stunting of her colleagues.

A lot of drama has engulfed the transportation of her body. The bottom line is this- once again a top Nigerian politician has come in to rescue the day, while 'friends' haven't been able to come through.

This isn't the first time we are witnessing this. A Nigerian celebrity has serious health issues and his 'friends' in the industry can't pull resources together to do what is required. Most times, a politician has to come in at the last minute to save the day e.g OJB Jezreel and Ngozi Nwosu.

Something is not adding up because if you scroll through your Instagram timeline you would see your favourite stars balling. It's a common sight to see top actresses with designer bags that can buy houses in some states, and male celebs in flashy cars.

However, this lavish lifestyle does not reflect when it comes to helping an ailing colleague. We have lost a number of celebrities who begged for funds to treat their ailment before they died. Their pleas must have died in unread DM and WhatsApp group messages.

The show must go on in showbiz and I guess helping out a colleague is not showbiz. Pardon me, but it seems that our stars would go all out to look charitable on the timeline because of PR than help a colleague in need. I guess it is better to look like a good Samaritan than actually be one.

Yes, what celebs do with their money is their own business. It, however, doesn't tell well of them that they can stunt for the 'gram but neglect basic human kindness.

Maybe, in reality, they do not have this money that they claim and it is all a show, a mirage to make us think that they have deep pockets and heavy back accounts.

Whatever the case maybe, Nigerian celebs need to do more for the sick and dying among them. It's the human thing to do.
