Man reportedly commits suicide after being dumped by fiancée

A civil servant in Imo State, Mr. Chibuzor Awobi, has committed suicide after he was dumped by his long-time girlfriend.

The Nekede based civil servant who is a staff of the State Ministry of Internal Resources and Pensions took his own life after drinking a poisonous substance.

It was alleged that the 36-year-old Awobi killed himself after the parents and brothers of his fiancée, a certain Chioma Agukpaha from Ihitte Emeabiam community of the state refused giving their consent for him to marry her.

Awobi according to reports had invested a lot of money into the relationship. It was revealed that he financed the higher education of the girl and afterwards helped her to secure a job at Diamond Bank in Owerri.

Things went eerie when Awobi went to Chioma’s family to seek their consent as he intended marrying their daughter. After initially refusing, the family allowed him to go on with the traditional rites and wedding dates were fixed.

The traditional wedding was fixed to hold on Sunday, December 28, 2014 and the white wedding for Saturday January 3, 2015 at the Emmanuel Anglican Church Nekede.

On Wednesday, December 2014, precisely three days to the traditional wedding, Chioma was kidnapped and later released on December 29, a development which led to the cancellation of the traditional wedding.

Reports have it that Choima was kidnapped by a relatives to jeopardise the fixed wedding. Awobi then took the case to the police which led to the arrest of the relative. This action caused tension between him and the girl’s family; he was told to bail the suspect he arrested else he won’t be allowed to marry their daughter.

He granted their request, ensured the bailing of the said relative who masterminded the kidnapping of his fiancée. After bailing the relative, Chioma’s family still didn't allow the wedding to go on.

Out of frustration, Mr. Chibuzor Awobi was reported to have poisoned himself.

Some family members are however insisting that the deceased didn’t commit suicide but had slumped and died as a result of heart break.
